The biggest regret I hear from pet parents about photos
As a pet photographer, I have the privilege of meeting incredible people and the animals they love. I get to hear stories about goofy puppies, loyal companions, senior dogs with gray muzzles, and once-in-a-lifetime bonds that can never truly be put into words.
But there is one thing I hear from pet parents over and over again.
"I wish I had done this sooner."
Not once. Not occasionally.
Almost every single time someone loses a beloved pet and reaches out to me afterward, they tell me the same thing: they thought they had more time.
The truth is, most of us do.
Until we don't.
We Always Think There Will Be Another Day
Life gets busy. Work deadlines pile up. Family schedules fill the calendar. We tell ourselves we'll book the session next month, after the holidays, when things slow down, when the weather is better, when the puppy is older, when we have more money, when we lose a few pounds, when life feels a little less chaotic.
But our pets don't experience time the way we do.
While we are measuring years, they are living each day completely in the moment.
One day they are chasing tennis balls across the yard, greeting us at the door, and curling up beside us on the couch.
Then suddenly, a diagnosis arrives. An accident happens. Age catches up faster than expected.
Life can change in an instant.
Days Are Not Promised
None of us like to think about losing the animals we love.
They become woven into our daily routines. They are there for celebrations, heartbreaks, moves, marriages, new babies, and quiet evenings at home. They witness chapters of our lives that no one else sees.
Because they are such a constant presence, it's easy to believe they'll always be there.
But the hardest lesson every pet parent learns is that our time together is never guaranteed.
I know this not only as a photographer, but as a dog mom.
I understand what it feels like to look at a photo and instantly be transported back to a moment you thought you'd never forget. The way their ears looked when they were listening. The expression that was uniquely theirs. The tiny details that seemed impossible to lose but somehow fade with time.
Photographs become priceless because they preserve the things our hearts desperately want to hold onto.
The Perfect Time Doesn't Exist
One of the most common reasons people postpone a session is because they are waiting for the "perfect" time.
But your dog doesn't need to be perfectly trained.
Your puppy doesn't need to grow into their paws first.
Your senior dog doesn't need to be having a "good week."
You don't need to lose weight.
Your family doesn't need matching outfits.
The perfect time is simply while they're here.
The muddy paws, the gray whiskers, the crooked ears, the goofy expressions—those are the things you'll treasure most one day.
Photos Become More Valuable With Time
Today, a portrait of your dog may simply feel like a beautiful image.
Ten years from now, it becomes a memory.
Twenty years from now, it becomes a piece of your history.
And someday, it may become one of your most treasured possessions.
When our pets leave us, photographs become one of the few tangible connections we have left. They remind us not only of what our pets looked like, but how deeply they were loved.
Don't Wait
If you've been thinking about scheduling photos with your pet, consider this your gentle reminder.
Don't wait for the perfect season.
Don't wait until life slows down.
Don't wait until next year.
Take the photos.
Celebrate the relationship you share right now.
Because while none of us know how much time we have, we do know that the memories we preserve today become the treasures we hold tomorrow.
And if there's one regret I hear more than any other, it's never that someone took the photos.
It's that they waited too long.
At Point and Shoot Photography, my mission is simple: to help pet parents preserve the love, personality, and connection they share with their pets before those moments become memories. Because every pet deserves to be celebrated, and every family deserves photographs they'll cherish for a lifetime.
If you've been thinking about professional photos with your pet, I'd love to help you create something meaningful. Reach out today and let's start planning a session that celebrates the bond you never want to forget.
